Delhi Noida International Airport set to be India’s Greenest Airport

India is all set to begin the construction of its greenest airport on the outskirts of Greater Noida in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi Noida International Airport (DNIA) terminal will aim to achieve a LEED Gold standard certification by incorporating a carbon-neutral design.

The project is being developed by the Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a joint venture of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Airport Authority of India (AAI), and Zurich International Airport. The YIAPL signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in New Delhi on March 24, 2021, marking a major breakthrough in the development of the project.

The bhoomi pujan (akin to a groundbreaking ceremony) for the first stage of the airport is likely to take place on April 15, 2021, and it is expected to begin operations in 2024. The first airstrip will spread across 1,334 hectares of land and will include a new terminal complex, air traffic control tower, runway, taxiways and aircraft parking, cargo facilities, and ancillary buildings.

The first of the five phases of the project will be developed with a budget of $700m to accommodate approximately 12 million passengers per year. The second phase of the project will add another runway, an additional terminal, and airfield infrastructure to increase the overall capacity to 30 million passengers per year.

The airport is designed by an architectural team comprising Nordic Office of Architecture, Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, and STUP Consultants. Jacobs has been selected as the program management consultant to provide construction management, digital solutions, design and interface management, strategic planning, risk management, procurement and contract management, testing, and commissioning services.

The new airport is expected to ease the traffic congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is anticipated to see more than 100 million passengers by 2030.
